Hi, I’m a family and wedding photographer based in beautiful Belper, where I live with my wife Emma, our three-year-old daughter Evelyn, and our slightly grumpy cat Burt.
I specialise in relaxed, low-stress photography that puts people first—no awkward poses, no forced smiles, just genuine moments and real connection. My goal is to make you feel completely at ease, so your photos reflect who you truly are.
As an award-winning photographer, I’ve learned that the best images come when you're comfortable, present, and just being yourself. That’s what I’m here to capture.
I founded Matthew Anthony Photography! And I haven't looked back since...
Just after the birth of our daughter, Evelyn, I started to offer free photoshoots to local families to build a portfolio. I loved the experience, and the positive comments from clients really spurred me on to take this whole photography thing more seriously!
During lockdown, I purchased a small 35mm camera. With lots of help from YouTube, I taught myself the theories of exposure and composition. I loved having a creative outlet in the form of photography, but the with the price of 35mm film increasing, I decided to invest in digital equipment.
I went to university to study biomedical science. After graduating (with a 1st!), I joined the NHS as a biomedical scientist in haematology.
My parents gave me my very first digital camera—a Canon PowerShot. I was so excited to have my own camera that I took it with me everywhere, snapping photos of anything and everything that caught my eye. I ended up using it so often, and probably not always gently, that it eventually wore out and broke within a year!
The results were amazing
My motto is 'people first, photographs second'. So what do I mean by this? Well, I always take the time to get to know clients first, before I start snapping! I believe that the photographer/client relationship is THE most important thing in ensuring our photography session is as relaxed and laid back as possible!
