Choosing to have a natural, outdoor family photoshoot rather than a studio might seem a bit daunting at first. What will the lighting be like? Will the weather be OK? What do I wear? These are all genuine worries! There’s always going to be less ‘control’ over your environment when outdoors, compared to a studio. You can’t simply alter the temperature or lighting to get the conditions just perfect. And yet, I would recommend an outdoor family photography session over a studio shoot any day. And here’s why…
There’s so much for children to see and explore on an outdoor family photoshoot! Catching candid photographs of your children playing and having fun is something that you just can’t achieve in a studio. These un-posed candid photos full of genuine joy and laughter are the photos you are really going to treasure in the years to come. You’ll remember not just how they looked, but also their cheeky personalities!
Studio lights aim to imitate natural light, but they’re just not the real thing! Admittedly, outdoor lighting can be variable, but when it’s good, it’s SO GOOD!! Especially around sunrise and sunset during the ‘golden hour’. Natural light also gives your images more authenticity and atmosphere.
Maybe there’s a favourite park where you like to walk? Or a playground that you used to take your little one to when they were tiny? Having an outdoor family photoshoot means you get to pick your location! This can give your photographs deeper, more personal significance for you. Photograph taken in a place that you love will always hold a special place in your heart, with all the memories they will hold for you when you look back on them.
With studio family portrait sessions, your photos will likely look pretty identical to everyone else’s. If this is what you’re after – great! I just may not be the right photographer for you 🙁 But if you like your photoshoots to be just as unique as your family then an outdoor family photoshoot is the perfect fit!
Kids love running around and burning off excess energy. In a studio, space is limited so kids could be forgiven for getting a bit bored and cranky! No so with an outdoor photoshoot! There’s so much space to run around and things to see and do that you (and the kids) wont get bored. Trust me, the last thing you want is a bored, cranky toddler on your photoshoot…
